Westvleteren 12 is a beer brewed by monks in the town of Westvleteren in the old Trappist tradition. A beer can only carry the official Trappist label if it is brewed by monks within the walls of the abbey and only in support of their traditional lifestyle. There are only a dozen authentic Trappist beers in the world, and Westvleteren is widely regarded as the best.

Westvleteren 12 has always achieved very high scores in tasting competitions and with almost perfect results it has often been awarded as the best beer in the world. The monks also make two other types of beer: Westvleteren 8 and the Westvleteren Blond beer. Both are excellent beers that everyone with an interest in Belgian beer should definitely try.
