Our company is called Donauers Lebküchnerei und Chocolaterie, and we are a family-run business from Nuremberg.
We make many different products ourselves: our traditional Nuremberg gingerbread, chocolate and pralines, cakes and many other sweet specialities.
One thing is especially important to us: quality.
We use the best raw materials we can get on the world market. Because for us, a good product always starts with good ingredients.
We don’t want to save money – and you should be able to taste it in the end.
And this combination of the best raw materials, traditional craftsmanship and our passion for our products is what makes our company special.
When we talk about our company, we have to start with the history of Nuremberg.
In 1395, gingerbread was mentioned in Nuremberg for the first time. So we have a tradition of more than 600 years.
At that time, Nuremberg was an important trading city, located on important spice and trade routes. Many different spices came to our city through these trade routes.
These spices are very important for Nuremberg gingerbread.
We like to call this “the taste of the Middle Ages.”
We want to preserve and share this taste today.
But our tradition is not only about what we make. It is also about how we make it.
We don’t just want to talk about this old craftsmanship. We want to show it.
For this traditional method, you don’t need much: a stand, a spatula, a wafer, the gingerbread dough and, at the end, the almonds.
The wafer is placed on the stand.
Then the gingerbread dough is spread onto the wafer by hand with the spatula.
Finally, the almonds are placed on top.
This is exactly how gingerbread was made by hand in the past.
This traditional method was used in larger bakeries until around 1840.
In smaller businesses, this traditional handwork was sometimes still used until the 1980s.
Today, we want to show and bring this old craftsmanship back to life.
Because for us, tradition is not just something you talk about.
Tradition has to be seen, experienced and, of course, tasted.
And from this combination of Nuremberg, spices and our history, one of our special products was created: the Dürer Kugel.
The Dürer Kugel is dedicated to Albrecht Dürer, one of the most famous sons of Nuremberg.
He was one of the most important artists of the Renaissance and is still closely connected with Nuremberg today.
For us, the Dürer Kugel connects the famous son of our city with the taste of the Middle Ages.
The spices that once came to Nuremberg along the old trade and spice routes can also be found in our Dürer Kugel.
With one product, we are telling a small part of Nuremberg’s history.
The Dürer Kugel is also patented, which makes it a very special product for our company.
So when you taste the Dürer Kugel, you should not simply taste chocolate an nuts. You should taste Nuremberg – its history, its spices and a little piece of the Middle Ages.
Our own company has also developed a lot over the years.we startet in 2016 with just 15 square metres, an a Little Store.
Those 15 square metres later became 120 square metres, and today we work and produce on around 1,200 square metres.
Today, we have around 40 employees and four places in Nuremberg where people can buy and, of course, enjoy our products.
As our company has grown, our production has also changed.
Today, modern machines help us in many areas of our production.
Our goal is not to replace traditional craftsmanship.
And one thing is especially important to us: our machines do not change the taste of our products.
With large industrial producers, products sometimes have to be developed and changed so that they work well with the machines.
For us, it is exactly the other way around:
The machine has to adapt to our product – not our product to the machine.
Because in the end, it is not the machine that decides how a product should taste – it is our customers’ taste.
So we combine more than 600 years of tradition, the best raw materials, real craftsmanship and modern technology – without losing sight of the taste.
And this combination is what makes our company what it is today.
We don’t simply want to sell chocolate and gingerbread.
We want to tell stories, preserve craftsmanship and give our customers a little piece of Nuremberg.
Or, in short:
We want people to taste Nuremberg.
